一．Holidays（假日）

Tom：Oh dear, I suppose it’s time to start thinking about the summer holidays again. The papers are full of travel articles.

Sue： They always are at this time of year. Have you got somewhere already in mind?

Tom:I just think it would be nice to go somewhere different, for example, Tibet.

Sue:Where? Tibet? But it’s quite far away. It will cost a lot.

Tom:But you know I’d like to go somewhere out-of–the-way. Somewhere where there aren’t many tourists. I haven’t been to Tibet, but some people I know tell me it’s a wonderful place for a holiday.

Great Britain or the United Kingdom is an island（岛屿） that stands off the northwest coast（海安） of Europe. The nearest country is France which is twenty miles away and from which Great Britain is separated（分离） by the English Channel. The island is surrounded (围绕) by the Atlantic Ocean, to the west and the North Sea, to the east. It is made up of three parts, England, Wales and Scotland. Scotland is the north, while Wales is in the west. Ireland, which is also an island, stands off the west coast of Great Britain. It is made up of Northern Ireland and the IrishRepublic. Great Britain together with Northern Ireland constitutes (组成) the United Kingdom. Thus, the United Kingdom is made up of four parts. The largest of these is England, which is divided (分成) into forty-three counties. The capital city is London which stands in Southeast England.
